oh courant
So this outfit post is a day late, but image-heavy, so you'll have to forgive me. Let's move on and I'll promise to never leave you hanging again!

Among my favorite fashionistas-turned-actresses is Kate Hudson. FYI: her mom went to my high school, so we're pretty tight.

I've always admired her off-camera style: she's a bohemian princess who is a secret label whore. Her string of on-screen roles haven't been that great, but I'll always love her as Penny Lane in Almost Famous. {Although 99% of that love can be directly linked to her fabulous jacket. Remember that jacket?}

Pulling off as much shag fur trim as Penny Lane is quite difficult for those of us not living in the '70s. I was stoked when I came across a gorgeous tan suede jacket with white fur trim.

Drumroll please...

I am obsessed with this jacket! Not only is it in great quality, but it's got a modern fit and side pockets, all the better to keep my hands warm in the winter months.

Now for the price:

That's a sideways $29.99, pretty good for such a lovely jacket but more than I usually spend on a single piece. No worries since it was half-off everything due to Columbus Day being both a Federal Holiday and the transition between seasons. I took it upon myself to single-handedly clear out the entire store and help make room for the new shipments. #notsorry.

GPOY: braggy cell-phone shot of my receipt. Whatta deal.

Now onto the outfits! Channeling Penny Lane proved to be more challenging than I thought, but I ended up returning to a classic piece: my favorite cream crochet shift dress.

Any fashionista knows the well-received rule: Never show too much skin! I layered my dress over a white long sleeve tee for a somewhat school-teacher vibe, but I love it nonetheless.

It's quite a monochromatic outfit full of shades of cream and tan, perfect for fall.

bisous,

Another lovely card from my favorite printers, quotablecards, who make lovely cards (duh) as well as coffee mugs, (caffeine addicts rejoice!), calendars, notepads, etc. Chances are they're in stock at the cute boutique near your office/down the street/at the local organic market. They're cool like that.

Have you ever noticed how more meaningful compliments tend to be when they're focused towards your outfit? Whenever my thrift store finds get attention from a fashionable stranger, I feel an instant boost in my attitude. There's something to be said for vintage enthusiasts//kindred spirits, am I right?

Personal style is something that everyone should aim to cultivate, and nothing can inspire you to continue on your mission  quite like a sincere compliment on a one-of-a-kind piece you worked hard to find and style
p-e-r-f-e-c-t-l-y, so next time you see a well-dressed fashionista, let her know!

Who knows when you'll get one in return?

In the name of a 73-degree day in October I skipped took a vacation day from work and attempted to be productive and finally cross off some tasks from my growing to-go list.

I may have passed on completing my list in favor of a Tex-Mex lunch {and margaritas} but I managed to score one major find that I've had my heart set on: A TRIPOD.

I absolutely adore {FreeCycle} and you should too! All you need is a Yahoo e-mail adress and you can join your local board, search by zip-code and search through the message board for whatever your heart desires. Freecycle is an internet forum for lazy people who don't want to make a trip to the dump, no I'm totally kidding. It's where people can pass off or pick up gently-used items, with no charges, fees or sketchy midnight craigslist dealings.

I furnished my entire apartment at school from this site, and I didn't have to travel too far to do it. I strongly advise FC newbies to browse through the messages and see whats up for grabs in their neck of the woods.

For those with more time-sensitive needs: posted a "wanted" message and see who blows up your inbox next.

Long story short: I'm the proud new owner of a ProMaster 6300 digital camera tripod. Get ready for some bad-ass OOTDs starting Monday.

Have I mentioned that I LOVE fall?! Well, I do. A lot. There's nothing better than crisp fall weather and needing to bundle up in cozy sweaters. Today's pick is a lovely Ralph Lauren navy and white striped sweater. I picked up this beaut for $2.99 on my latest thrifting spree and haven't taken it off since!

The obligatory price-tag shot. Is there some official price-tag writer? Every tag has the same handwriting, so I'm thinking some poor soul's 9 to 5 job consists of writing out price tags. I'm envisioning a dimly light office with stacks of price tags and a daily email: "Hey Employee X, we're going to need twelve-thousand $2.99s, five hundred $9.99s and a dozen of $12.99s. See what you can get done by lunchtime."

I mean, whoever is trusted with this task has got to be battling hand cramps on a daily basis. And what about the shoes?!  I have so many questions, you guys.

I like this sweater with a pair of super flared, dark wash Hudson jeans. (Another thrift find, no biggie.) I'm going through a serious navy phase right now, and it just seemed to work.

Pardon the less than thrilled look on my face; the best models are often the most melancholy, right?

Close up shot of the logo. (I'm a self-proclaimed label whore, so you'll have to get used to these.) Side note: Is Ralph Lauren royalty? I'm definitely digging the purple, red & green crown/laurel branch combo.

A girl can never own too many stripes tops--they're always appropriate, and I think I'm finally realized why I love this one in particular. Get ready for this: they're the perfect mix of French sophistication and American classic. What's more French than stripes? Nothing! Is there anything more classical than a medium weight cotton knit sweater? I don't think so. Put the two together and what do you get? The most perfect sweater in all the land.

Don't believe me? Rude.

cue the inspiration board!

What's good enough for Emma Watson, Ashley Olsen and my #spiritanimal Rachel Bilson better be good enough for your closet. What are you waiting for? Go see whose old striped sweater you can buy for under 5-bucks and turn into a classic daytime look (with the help of a patent satchel and cream scarf) or rock at nighttime with some sparkly accessories.

There is something about watching  clicking through galleries of the new runway shows that makes me want to take a pair of scissors to my closet and see what happens.

Isabel Marant's collection for spring 2012 is no different. She mixed bright colors and textures in a retro-chic style that was very reminiscent of my grandmother's craft closet. Each of my favorite looks has an overarching I-could-buy-that-at-the-thrift-store kinda feel.

Any self-proclaimed fashionista of the '80s has a soft spot for acid washed denim, however deep dark and secretive it may be. I'm not quite sure about wearing floral print pants with this look, but I adore this jacket. Her design aesthetic is perfect--rugged metal embellishments and orange Indian-themed designs add a lovely decorative flair to what would be an otherwise outdated look.

Remember the metal body-chain trend that was way too leash-like for any respectable fashionista to wear? This dress is totally a totally awesome and appropriate version of that trend, in a fun bright red shade. Plus, I can't help but be reminded of those weave-your-own potholder kits when I look at the braided halter detail of this dress. This dress is the perfect blend of color, texture wrapped up in a cute nostalgically crafty package.

Ah, peasant tops how I love you so. The floral detailing is gorgeous on the sheer fabric, and the tassels are so delicate and feminine. '80s babies don't really do tie-dye (sooo '90s) but I can't get enough of the subtle dyed effect on this linen pair.

The styling of this look is quite unrealistic; I have a strict no-pants-there's-a-problem policy, but the texture of the lace inspires me to dig through the racks of vintage tablecloths and curtains and make myself a shift dress just. like. this. It's modern yet vintage, sheer but modest. A floor length lace caftan would be otherwise boring if it weren't for the interesting and somewhat geometric pattern of the weave, and the wide boat neck. I need one immediately.

For nighttime, a cropped curtain dress in black layered over a sparkly disco ball silver dress. When you're done wearing this out on the town, ditch the slinky number and wear this over some skinnies and a black blouse for a Stevie Nicks vibe.

I'm seriously digging the old lady vibes of this dress: the neckline of a pussy-bow blouse, made modern with a super tight skirt in a golden lamé material. Ever seen those leather patchwork bags that seem to multiply at thrift stores, in monochromatic leather? This fabric is definitely inspired by the same subtle pattern of a patchwork feel.

This crocheted dress is gorgeous in silver. Knitted dresses are hard to pull off, but the large diagonal knit of this is so youthful and fun. Let the texture do the talking instead of the color; this is definitely a grown up chain mail dress sans the Renaissance fair threat of a hammered-metal-dress.

My second favorite look of the collection, probably because Santa never brought me that be dazzler I wanted to this day for years on end. As if this look wasn't kick-ass enough, she's layered it over a deep v-neck with crochet detail and fringe.

Are you digging the hippy-crafter chic look from Mme Marant?

With the exception of my mother, I don't know any living, breathing female who doesn't love Breakfast at Tiffany's for any number of reasons: the plot line centered around a flighty, insecure yet lovable country girl trying to make it in the BIG city; the fashionable costume design from the famed couturier Hubert Givenchy; the iconic camera shots of the Tiffany & Co. building on Fifth Avenue and the New York City library. Take your pick.

Today's only Wednesday, so it's a given that I am having a Holly Golightly moment of my own; sleep-deprived and unwilling to become vertical before noon. (It helps that I have a orange tabby cat, to complete the picture in your mind.)

Here are a few of my favorite Holly-inspired items that will be helping to get me through the week:

    • As an obsessive compulsive self-manicurist, I can never decide one a polish color to last me through the week, but this  lovely robins-egg blue manicure might be my new staple.

    • Any ideas on where I can snag a matching bicycle via {tm7} to take on weekend adventures?Seriously considering giving my ancient set of wheels a fresh coat in a more Tiffany-approved shade.

    • Not all sleep is created equal; I'd kill for some glamourous shut eye,  if only I had a replica of Holly's most famous nap-time accessory.

    • For those in need of some feline company, find yourself a cat of your own and give it a name! {And if you're reading this Moss House, I'll be hiding printouts around your house until you finally adopt a cat.}

    • The impractical part of me has always wanted to make my own bathtub sofa. {But I don't own a circular saw, or have the space in my home. Quel rat!}

Be honest...how many of you have gone as Holly for Halloween at least once?

By now you know that I absolutely adore Kate Middleton and her fashion choices. (Me and every other woman on the planet, I know.) Ever since the engagement and announcement of the Royal Wedding, her wardrobe has been analyzed by every faux-fashionista on the planet, and stores can't keep her purchases in stock. Or knockoffs for that matter.

    What's a girl to do?!

Go thrifting of couse! There isn't anything special to Kate's fashion; she's a natural beauty who picks modest, classic silhouettes in neutral colors and makes figure-flattering choices. Quel role model. Finding similar pieces is not an impossible challenge when shopping secondhand.

Ever since the release of the royal wedding photos of Kate in a blue shift dress and black wedges, women from here to across the pond have been snapping up similar dark hued espadrilles. They're terribly hard to find in stock online and in-stores for good reason: they go with everything.

    cue the inspiration board!

I was inspired to find a pair of my own, and was looking for a pair of closed-toe rounded pumps. Espadrilles come in every shape and color, but sling-backs are a tad too summery for my taste. I ended up snagging a pair of patent leather pointy-toed wedges.

Pointy toed wedges? As strange as it seems, and as un-Kate Middleton as they look, I adore them!

Birds-eye view of the shoes! I love them. (P.S. they're Anne Klein.)

Have I mentioned that they're the perfect height? Just enough of a wedge too add some needed height to my 5' 4" frame without being too tall.

The best part? The price: $6.99. What's that in GBP, Kate? I love love love these shoes.

I was skeptical about buying a pair of glossy leather wedges, considering most of the pairs I'd seen online were canvas or another matte material, that is, until I saw these beauties.

They're the Lanvin Espadrille Wedge Pump and approximately 100x the price of my second-hand score. Until then, I'm perfectly set with my pair.

Be it round or pointy-toed, in your choice of finish, espadrille wedges are a great alternative to basic black pumps or regular wedges. Plus, the tan jute heel is a natural fiber (I know my #textiles) so it's quite easy to clean off as compared to suede, and will hide normal wear & tear much better than leather.

Keep your eyes peeled for a pair of navy or black espadrille wedges! They go with everything.
