january picks

It's that time again: the sales are upon us. Answer the call of the shoes at Net-à-Porter with a few sensible-but-gorgeous picks.
Here are a few of my favorite picks for every season: a sherling boot which some attitude by Choé. A pink sandal with no shortage of colored tassels which mean only one thing: they go with everything. Gold bruges with just the right amount of grommets. A shiny pair of black boots with the perfect ankle detail, subtle enough for any outfit. Comfy knit sneakers that look nice and the lace-up pair of Christy flats from Aquazurra that I've been dreaming about, in cobalt blue.

hats and hats and hats

Finding a hat that looks nice on me is a struggle! Blame it on an oddly-sized cranium due to sitting too close to the tv every Saturday morning of my youth plus an obsession with texting that has permanently burned my retinas. In a sea of choices, here are a few toppers that have caught my eye. The peach-colored fedora by rag & bone is not only a great way to stand out in the crowd, but also on sale!

Paris is (undeniably) the capital of fashion. Home to the top couture houses in the world, Paris also boasts some of the top-level schools in fashion design, creation and management.

In France, the Ivy-League schools are referred to as Grands Ecoles, "big" schools that enjoy name-recognition with a significant price-tag to boot.

In 2016, the IFM (Institut Français de la mode) ranked in as the #1 fashion school in France, and #3 worldwide.

The school offers classes in both English and French, as well as summer school programs. Founded in 1986 by Pierre Bergé, the school maintains a strong connection with professional organizations and fashion houses in it goal to provide a practical education with an emphasis on experience over theory. To put it lightly, if you can make it at the IFM, you can make it anywhere.

If you're interested in applying the IFM, there are many important factors to consider. Stay tuned for more!

Halloween may not be a huge deal in France as it is in America, but the French don't joke around--I've got a found-day weekend, no school until Wednesday! I'm off to Deauville tomorrow and in the spirit of all things French and chic, I'm channeling a '90s DKNY vibe: no shoulders.

For those of you living under a damn rock, Michelle Obama just stepped out in a rose-gold chain mail dress custom-made by Versace Atelier for her last ever State Dinner as First Lady First Fashionista.

Yes and yes and yes and yeeeeessss.

{FWN}
Let's go back in time and review one of the most iconic materials to ever grace the runway. The year is 1982...

The famous title of "supermodel" had just become a thing, and France's future Première Dame was just a runway model with a penchant for chain-smoking and blunt bags. Kate and Naomi were forging a beautiful friendship over their shared height-issues.

{FD}

Chain metal would be one of the signature looks of Gianni Versace's creations until his death in 1997. That July, he would send gold chain mail year down the runway in July, while Caroline Murphy would wear one of his creations to the Met Gala which honored him with a retrospective of his designs.

The fall/winter collection of 2012 brought back the chain-mail, in lighter silver tones.

Can we please look at sassy Lindsey Wixson here? Microbangs be damned, she looks great.

With only one week left until All Hallow's Eve, better known as Halloween for my anglophone friends, the time has come to channel your inner sorcière. Voici, a few crucial pieces to bewitch everyone you meet.

the witching hour

Off-the-shoulder slinky dresses give you more room to work with and show off an epic pair of tassel earrings, in the perfect spiced-pumpkin shade.

Vogue keeps preaching the benefits of fuzzy shoes, which gives me even more of a reason to splurge for these Alexander Wang sandals. They'll look great with a pair of sheer tights, which for me equals a year-round shoe. That's what they call a practical purchase.

The spring/summer collection for 2017 has been exciting to watch for many reasons: Maria Grazia Chiuri at the head of Dior showed an embroidery-heavy collection of tulle gowns, evoking a totally Valentino feel. YSL (the Y is back) headed by Anthony Vaccarello, was an bizarre mix of asymmetric black dresses and sequin pasties. The overarching trend in Paris, however, is the color fuchsia. Take a pick at some of the shocking pick outfits that walked the runway in Paris this week.

Happy Wednesday, once again! Ascension Day is celebrating in France with a long weekend in the countryside: Parisian au pairs (the lucky ones, at least) are off on vacation tomorrow. I'll be off to Arromanches, in Normandy, fighting the cold and wind, a small price to pay to enjoy a few tranquil days spent by the sea.

As usual, Parisian weather is cold and gray--we're only now ditching the sweaters in favor of tee shirts and bare arms. The immaculate parks are filling up with children ready to enjoy the warmer weather, and I find myself surrounded by hoards of the same weekend outfits: polos + sneakers + jeans + assorted adorable accessories.

My favorite five-year-old wears glasses (when he can keep track of them) in an adorable bright blue-green combo. These round glasses seem to be all the rage in Paris right now, in fact I think that they seem to be the only acceptable style for kids! The Lacoste store by our house has got new window displays featuring flag-icons and patterns, just in time for the Summer Olympics. I love this French-version: a subtle tricolore crocodile makes the classic French polo even cuter.

Lest we not forgot the Bensimon sneakers, they French equivalent of Converse Chuck Taylors. Simple, understated and indestructible, every French child seems to have a pair or twelve of these in their closet. A pair of brightly colored ecouters help drown out the sound of city traffic. These awesome ones are from a cool gadget store, La Chaise Longue.

xoxo.

Trust the French to turn Fashion Week into three weeks of excitement, parties and photo-opportunities. Last Monday marked the beginning of the Spring/Summer shows of Haute Couture. Of the 20-plus designers who were scheduled to show over the four day I was only able to make it* to one: Chanel.

*And of course, by make it, I mean I had time during the day to stand outside the Grand Palais and photograph famous women who had tickets to see the runway show. Glad we cleared that one up.

Never mind that Thursday was the week of electronics-hell, since my camera was still working I had everything I needed. The show was scheduled to begin at 10h, and in the true spirit of all-things-fashionable, I arrived at quarter-til, hoping for a chance to spot anyone who strategically waited to arrive late.

Chanel + Karl Lagerfeld have shown at the Grand Palais for many seasons, and for good reason: the building is centrally located between the Champs Elysees and the Seine, with a grandious stone and glass exterior. The space inside is perfect to stage creatively set shows, and Chanel has taken advantage of this: who could forgot their carousel-themed center stage.

Look familiar? The photo below, from Vogue.fr, proves that you don't have to be famous to make it, just a bit aggressive and stubborn. I'm at left, wearing a less-than-photogenic safari jacket and new black ankle boots, which are so amaze that they deserve their own post.

Leave it to the bloggers and photographers to be dressed fabulously as well, some even better than the actual show attendees proving that true style doesn't come from logos or head-to-toe designer looks.

I was intrigued by this little woman whose large leopard coat kept her from being a complete doppelgänger to the Incredibles' Edna Mode. A quick and well timed glance proved to explain the familiarity: she works for Elle.

In a sea of black and denim, this lovely ensemble of bright orange and cobalt caught my eye and I was envious of both her color coordination and the practical heel on her tasseled loafer pumps. One must always been comfortable when stalking down celebrities!

These pants were my favorite of the day--I love the colorful patterns, toned down and day-time appropriate in a breezy trouser cut pant.

I was envious of her bold burgundy colored bag and the effortless chic of her headscarf, a concept I have not yet mastered.

The monochromatic palette of this outfit is perfect for winter, and her feathered handbag is a fun, unexpected touch of whimsy. Never one for winterhead bands, I'll admit this braided style works quite well.
