oh courant

Sometimes people ask me what my hobbies are; if their eyes start to glaze over at the first mention of my blog, I resign myself to the fact that I don't have much else to tell them about. But it's whatever makes you happy that matters.

Happy Friday to all my lovely followers! Here's a reminder that you should be sleeping in. I sure plan on it today, that is, if I get some more posts written up.

IFB, my main bitch blogging info-source recently posted a great article entitled, "20 signs you're a real fashion blogger," and it made me laugh out loud. Good thing I'm not working in a cubicle anymore. I'll openly admit to about 11 of these posts, secretly knowing that the other 9 are just as true. Not sorry.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Last minute holiday preparations of shopping, baking, and drinking have kept me very busy and away from my blog longer than I would care to admit. Finally, I'm back with a few snapshots of our family's Christmas tree and a few of my favorite ornaments. {This year saw the addition of two new French-themed ornaments-- gifted to me by a lovely and thoughtful co-worker!}

One of my most favorite textile-themed ornaments is this jewel-toned tassel.

I could not resist snapping a picture of a third-grade craft project: a glitter picture frame hanging next to a new mini-snow globe with my name printed on it!

Our family loves classic Disney films--we've had this Simba & Nala set in our collection years before we adopted our cat of the same name. Call it fate if you will, but they have their own space on the lower level branches so that the two can see eye-to-eye.

For the father who has everything, and loves all thing musical and Christmas: a set of flying-v guitar ornaments from Restoration Hardware. I earned major points in high school for finding this particular one--which still gets first pick on the tree.

Lastly, the pièce de résistance: an a eiffel tower ornament and beaded fleur de lys! Not only do these two reflect my love of all things French, my upcoming move to Paris and my intense love of glitter,  these both have a vintage feel to them that look great on our Douglas Fir tree.

Are their any new decorations you've stumbled upon this year? Please share!

Inspired by the likes of Rachel Zoe and the Olsen sisters, I've been on the lookout for a fur vest. Countless thrifting trips went unsuccessful, as I sifted through aisle after isle of puffer down vests, with no a fur vest in sight. Things got so bad that I considered taking the sleeves of a fur jacket I could find, any fur jacket I could find...

Suddenly, last weekend, the thrifting gods smiled upon me and offered up a lovely {and reversible} fur vest with light pink lining. Too good! Despite the suddenly-summer turn that DC weather has taken, I'm planning to wear this baby out on the town.

This outfit: J. Crew tartan button-up with ruffled collar, Express black skinny jeans, Nine West leather boots, thrifted fur vest.

Bonus: even my baby cat loves it.

This year will be my first attempt at a big-girl, real-life Secret Santa gift exchange. The friends over at Moss House decided to celebrate this year by drawing names out of a hat and shopping for alcohol each other. Thanks to the tremendous amount of recipes and craft projects on Pinterest, I'm going to giving the best presents ever. Not that it's a competition or anything...

This week's board doesn't exactly fit into our group's budget, so it won't be of any help, sorry guys. Instead, I've decided to go balls-to-the-wall and pin a set of exorbitantly expensive pieces from my wish list. Naturally, this week's theme shall be called, "if Alyssa won the lottery."

7 picks--a hodgepodge of insanely girly & unattainable things I want to wake up to on Christmas morning. {I don't have high hopes of this coming true, however.}

1. ivory quilted Chanel iPhone case, for the utmost in fashionable phone wear
2. Kenneth Jay Lane Fancy Stone Bib Necklace
3. lovely heart-shaped sparklers
4. bad-ass Valentino Rock Stud t-strap flats
5. bright neon Cambridge Company 15" satchel
6. Charmed Circle double stone bangles
7.  Kipling/Style Scrapbook designed camera bag  (sold out EVERYWHERE, i'll just have to settle on adding a gold chain strap to my camera bag and call it a day)
Anyone else playing Secret Santa this year? Feel free to share your picks and shopping list!

Deliciousness: close up
I've only just joined Pinterest, but it seems as if I've already written countless posts about how it has changed my life for the better. I've created  a handful of boards divided into specific themes: recipes, workouts, fashion, various craft projects, you name it... but I had yet to actually attempt any project I'd pinned, food or otherwise, until tonight.

Sunday night boredom-turned-hunger led me to browse through dessert recipes in search of a delicious and yet guilt-free snack to devour. {Bonus points for a recipe that required only 4 ingredients or less.} Enter a dairy-free, fat-free, chocolate & banana shake that tastes like better than ice cream. Say what?!

easy, peasy, recipe-sey.
This particular item had been making the rounds on my Pinterest dashboard, for good reason. It's pretty simple {see graphic to your right} and takes no time at all. First, cut up a banana or two and stick 'em in the freezer. Once they're ready, throw them in the blender with a teaspoon of cocoa powder and blend. Voila, c'est facile!

I was intrigued nonetheless, so I found some already-frozen bananas hiding in the arctic depths of my freezer and whipped up a batch of my own to try, fully expecting this to be a failure in the making.

Not only am I'm eating my words, I'm eating this ice cream-esque concoction like it's going out of style. Seriously, this stuff is so great, I want to cry.

Throwing together two ingredients in a blender takes, what, half a second to make? It's awesome and convenient. Since the "ice cream" texture comes from being frozen, you can avoid any dairy-based mix-ins, and avoid any sneaky fat calories.

No need for chocolate bars either: just add in as much cocoa powder as you want. Plus, some fellow pinners commented on this recipe, raving about how adding peanut butter can make this a perfect breakfast shake. Ice cream? For breakfast?! G-e-n-i-u-s! For someone who hates eggs and any breakfast-related cooking in the morning, this seemed like a no-brainer. What better way to trick myself into eating healthily while convincing my taste buds that they're still in control?

There's nothing that I love better than a great textile. Reading about textiles comes in as a close second, and eating Greek yogurt slides into third place.

This all explains why I was so jazzed when I opened up an email from my boss this morning, with a link to a book entitled, "Why do you call them Polka Dots?" This 13-page book dates back to 1918 and is available online thanks to the magic that is OpenLibrary.

File this one under TMYKAT: the more you know about textiles.

Finding this quote was such a relief to my psyche. Over the past month or so, I've had the same conversation with many a friend {often after a few drinks, mind you} centered around this very idea, and that of choices and relationships.

No matter whether your idea of love refers to a person, a job, a hobby or field of study, be sure to choose the perfect fit. Too many people fear leaving behind something they've invested time into, in the name of progress. But isn't life too short to settle?

Happy Saturday! Today marks the two-week point until New Years Eve and my departure to Paris! With so little time left, I'm spending this weekend in Philadelphia with some friends: shopping {but of course}, visiting the museums, and eating my face off.
Somehow I got roped into watching the Jets game tomorrow afternoon, so I'm in desperate need of recommendations to sneak off to! Any philly-residents are encouraged to help a blogger out.

This might be my favorite Friday Finds post, ever! Not only do I have an insanely great Friday Find, but I've also linked up with the amazing Hannah over at a cup of subtle tea!

She was nice enough to host a December holiday-themed link up, where I've posted a a tutorial on making a paper maiche christmas tree! Make sure to check out her blog--she's an amazing and talented crafter with a great eye and inspirational blog posts. My favorite? Her adorable scrabble-themed Christmas cards! Make sure you hop on over and check out her blog!

My blog is concerned with many things, but if you had to sum it up in only one sentence, it would be as follows: how to look more French. Rifling through the racks of blazers this past summer, I found this red striped top at one of my favorite shops. It fulfills the key requirements of any good Parisian jacket: Short? check. Boxy? check. Stripes? check. Bold color? check.

This number has been hanging in my closet ever since I bought it, patiently waiting to make it's appearance at the appropriate function. Today, this jacket gets its' chance to shine.

The shape of this jacket is quite classic and the inner lining has a gold chain trim running along the inside, rather Chanel-esque and a fun surprise! The bold color of the jacket matches one of my silk blouses perfectly, so I paired the two together with a simple straight jean. As I'm a sucker for gold jewelry, I added a thrifted chain, which upon further examination seems to be a replica Van Cleef pattern. The front pleat detail on this new favorite blouse features two tiny covered buttons. Très adorable!

The perks of working at the Smithsonian include a killer staff discount and access to hand-picked staff favorites, including this newly-published novel, Mona Lisa in Camelot. As both an art history lover and an insane Jackie Kennedy fan, I was mildly upset that I hadn't heard about this novel sooner. The story centers around one of her lesser-known accomplishments: negotiating the first American tour of the French-owned Mona Lisa.

Those who have been lucky enough to see the painting in person know that it isn't as spectacular as the hype surrounding it: the portrait sits behind a thick pane of plexiglass protection and is less than three feet high. I don't get it. Instead, I look forward to delving into the politics behind the art. Plus, Jackie's beaded pink strapless gown {pictured above} is my favorite piece of her White House ensembles, so I'll take that as a sign that this book belongs in my library.

Santa, are you reading my blog yet? I hear amazon.com has free shipping this week...you should check that out.

/ 1 / 2 / 3 / 4 / 5 / 6 / 7 /

My plane ticket to Paris is booked and I leave on the first of January. Crazy. In a semi-organized attempt to ask for travel-related products for Christmas, I've compiled a bunch of things I'll need to survive the mean streets of the 16th arrondissement.

1. Every fashion blogger seems to own one of these YSL arty rings and I'll admit to wanting one myself. I love this green & gold combination.

2. After having lost my SmartTrip card at least 3 times this week, it's time for me to trash my slide wallet in favor of a big-girl wallet. I love the color of this double-clasp version from Hobo International.

3. Did you know the French don't have to-go cups? It's tragic. If I'm going to be taking care of multiple children everyday, I will need instant access to caffeine at all times. This patterned mug might make the French reconsider their aversion to taking their coffee on the go.

4. Pencil eyeliner is too tricky for my shaky hands, but I find that Tarte eyeliner gel is super easy to apply and comes with a brush that helps you create the perfect line.

5. To-do lists have become my only source of motivation to be productive; pink pens make those lists so much prettier and more fun to write up.

6. Cold Paris winters call for sophisticated leather gloves and the zipper detail on these are adorable!

7. By now you know how much I love all things animal print especially when they come in pink unnatural shades like this awesome navy/magenta combo. I'm convinced that Rebecca Minkoff makes the perfect accessories.

Happy Monday, everyone! The days are getting longer {and colder} which only encourages me to hit the snooze button more times than usual in the morning, and to be frank, I'm okay with being a little late to work!

This weekend's errands called for some quality time spent at my local Target where I came across this adorable singing sock monkey. I should have taken him home with me, but I'd already gone over-budget on nail polish and other necessities. So instead, I snapped a quick video of him rocking out to some top 40.

Here's to a musical and magical Monday morning!

I've never been good at coming up with a Christmas list, let me rephrase that: I've never been able to stick to a list I come up with--when I see something I love, I buy it. It's a charming quality I inherited from my mother and it means that my friends and family are constantly struggling to keep up with me/my wallet/my closet.

As I've grown older, my tastes have matured and have become more, i'll admit, expen$ive. This wish-list is no different. If, in another world, there was a Santa that worked exclusively off of Pinterest, then I'd be a lucky girl. Alas, I'll have to settle for a virtual board of presents.

1. Alexander Wang 'Rocco' tote  2. Kate Spade 'emma book clutch'  3. Nikon D90 DSLR  4. adorable tissue paper votives  5. Miss Sixty 'Pancho' boots  6. J. Crew 'Oeuf' toy eiffel tower  7. DV by Dolce Vita 'Wyatt' blue suede booties

To be fair, I went ahead and bought myself the Nikon d90 in preparation for Blogging 2.0: living in Paris. But besides that, I'm keeping all of these items on a permanent do-not-buy status, in hopes that Santa may find it in his heart to bring me a few choice picks.

Love it? Hate it?

Late night tumblr-browsing led me to this lovely photo. Cold & dark Sunday nights seem to make everything seem dreadful but instead I'll think of Monday mornings as a fresh start.

This what happens when your wisdom teeth turn into dry sockets and you spend your Tuesday night watching skinny-little-somethings walk down the runway of the 2011 Victoria's Secret Fashion Show. Fage yogurt + InStyle + bananas = the breakfast of champions.

I've been getting such encouraging feedback {and making pinterest friends!} since having joined applevintage's Pinteresting link-up, so I've decided to renew it for a few more weeks of wish-list worthy posts.

As always, my Pinterest boards tend to be centered around clothes & jewelry-related, what can I say? Those are my iiiiiinterests. As the weather cools down, I'm realizing how unprepared my closet is to stay cute "{and sparkly} for the coming winter months. Cue leopard print & sequins!

1. 'Working Girl Bag,' aka the most stylish tote I've seen thus far.... 2. black & turquoise Kendra Scott earrings 3. the most awesome & sparkly accessory--Anthropologie 'Zowie' Scarf 4. bright green striped camera strap 5. I need a leopard jacket, immediately. 6. fun purple Minnetonka 'Kilty' loafers

This one is from the summer, hence the insane tan we're all rocking. And no, we did not coordinate our jewelry: it just happened to work out that way. I'm the arm on the right, wearing a vintage jade bracelet, bronze & rust-colored wrap bracelet from Madewell and my favorite Jet Set watch in horn by the genius Michael Kors.

In the fashion vault of history, MK will go down from his 'Jet Set' line of timepieces. It seems like everyone I know owns at least one watch from this line...for good reason. They come in every single color, and in varying face sizes and levels of b-l-i-n-g. If you don't have one, check 'em out. I'm not usually a watch girl, but I've worn mine almost daily and I'm nowhere near getting tired of it.

After a five-day weekend of recovering, eating, and shopping, it's finally time to head back to work. Ugh. Here's a quick peek into my life.

Getting all my wisdom teeth out {and snapping secret photos of my x-ray} required some serious grocery shopping at my favorite Whole Foods. Never one to let me down, the store had upped their cute factor since my last visit. Not only had they begun to decorate their Christmas trees and set up stuffed animal penguins, but they've also got some new gift cards in stock: fun colors and pun-ny greetings like happy hollandaise, for the halibut, hugs and quiches...how adorable?

Last week's visit to see 'The Muppets' midnight showing in Georgetown also ended up in some serious window shopping at Barney's, drooling over the rows of Alexander Wang 'Rocco' totes. Nothing like an Elf marathon to fall asleep to, with Simba by my side. Whatta goof.

As a child of the '90s, I remember fondly watching re-runs of the Muppet show before bed. Miss Piggy was my always favorite, for good reason. Another thing I like? Jason Segel. So naturally, shit hit the fan when my close friend and fellow J.S. enthusiast found his twitter account had a very excited announcement:

So after five minutes of high-pitched screaming and hysteria at Moss House, we snagged our tickets online. {It wasn't that easy, but we eventually got them.} Fast-forward to Tuesday night, 10pm. After a mini-detour, we were able to snag pretty good seats and even got some free posters while we waited for the 12:01 showing, introduced by the one and only Marshall Erikson Jason Segel. By quarter-til, our bladders were suffering, which would choose to be a sign from fate: my friend came back from the bathroom frantic and flushed, convinced she had seen JS from behind, busy taking photos before the screening was about to start. 5 minutes of pep-talk and we got the courage to leave our seats in an attempt to "bump into him" in the hallway.

A minute sooner and we would have made physical contact. If only. He entered the theater as we tried to exit and for a brief shining moment, I was 6 feet away from JS, making babies eye contact and wishing I had thought to shower that day. C'est la vie. Eventually he made an appearance with his team, and spoke to us about his own childhood experience with the Muppets, his work in reviving the Muppets movie and writing the script. Not only was he as adorable as he is on television, but he posed for photos with some very lucky {front-row} fans.
I won't lie and pretend that I wasn't That Girl: I spent $12 in hopes of seeing JS, but I stayed for Kermit & Miss Piggy. I love those two together, which may explain a lot about my romantic history... If you haven't seen the Muppets movie yet, you've got to. Dispite the chair-kickers who sat behind us {don't you hate those?!} the movie was hilarious, adorable and full of great musical numbers. Okay, cue photos of sassy Miss Piggy & Jason Segel, just for kicks.

I think Miss Piggy looks just like Stevie Nicks in the wedding photo, bottom left, don't you think? Gotta give the girl pig credit for staying in style for all these years!
